Protect Our Winters: Senate offers little support for climate change bill

Protect Our Winters (POW) is an organization started in 2007 by pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones, dedicated towards fighting climate change in the winter sports community. The group works in unison towards a common goal of reducing climate changes on our sports and local mountain communities. Beyond just grass roots efforts, POW seeks to become advocates for new legislation designed towards countering the effects of climate change.

Eighteen months ago, the new administration took office with a pledge to focus on a “planet in peril”. However, last week, Senate Democrats tabled the new climate legislation for the near future – something Protect Our Winters (POW) has larged criticized as a failure by the largest carbon emitter in the world to lead by example and place limits on carbon.

According to Senate Majority Harry Reid, Democrats felt they didn’t have the 60 votes it needed for approval. With Fall elections coming up, it’s unlikely that any significant climate legislation or carbon cap will be passed this year. But climate change won’t go away and it’s something that we’re all going to have to deal with, sooner or later.

POW has said they have no plans to give up their efforts, as the organization intends to keep pressure on Congress to make clean energy legislation a priority – to prevent climate change and protect our economic future.

POW has asked that we all keep sending our Senators letters, and to let them know that their inaction is unacceptable. With Senate summer recess coming up on August 7th, taking swift action now is crucial towards making climate change a priority in 2010. Simply send a quick letter to your Senator here at:
