Deer Valley President Bob Wheaton is a beloved character as far as The Ski Channel is concerned. So when we found out he went missing, we freaked. We’ve been tracking his story all day, biting our nails wondering why such an experienced mountain man would go missing. We found out why.
His horse got tired.
Yep, you heard it right. Bob was found after being missing for 24 hours in the Uinta Mountains Monday afternoon, tired, with an even more exhausted horse.
“My horse kind of gave out I would tug on her a little bit and let her rest,” he said in an interview in the Uintas. “I knew where I was. It just took a little bit longer than I thought.” He went about 32 miles off course, trying to get to Cuberant Lake.
“It’s rugged I have never been back to Cuberant Lake, and that’s where I was headed,” he said. “I lost the trail and went down thinking I was too far up.”
He was prepared with warm clothing, rain gear, water and a utility tool and bedded down for the night. Good job, Bob! Way to tie your horse and then pray! As it were…
