A 21-year-old man on a ski trip to Australia’s Mt. Buller ski area has died after becoming lost upon leaving the resort village.

The body of Alexander Aikman of Camberra was found Thursday morning approximately 1 km from the village. The man is believed to have left a club in the Mt. Buller Village and become lost in bush lands while trying to walk home by himself.

The man was reported missing by a friend at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday morning after discovering Aikman hadn’t returned home that night.

Nearly 12 hours after he was last seen, Aikman’s body was discovered by search and rescue teams and the Mt. Buller Ski Patrol.

Officials believe that freezing conditions, with wind chills hovering in the single digits overnight, contributed to his death.
