After 8 days of exhaustive searching, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have discovered the small plane that went missing last week after taking off on Aug. 17 en route to Victoria, B.C.
The Piper PA24 aircraft was found nearly 4 miles south of Apex Mountain ski resort. All 4 passengers aboard were killed.
Despite previous reports that the plane had links to the drug trade, RCMP officials say they found no signs related to criminal activity in the wreckage. The question now moves to asking how exactly the plane went down.
Local aviation experts have theorized that an optical illusion appropriately known as the “Apex illusion,” could be responsible for the downed plane. Essentially, the area’s sharp elevation gains aren’t noticeable to inexperienced pilots to the area, and often results in misjudging the necessary angle and distance required to clear the mountainous terrain.
