The U.S. Adaptive Ski Team will be heading north this season to Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, AK for the 2011 U.S. Adaptive Alpine Championships. The event will be held from March 21-28.
“It is a spectacular resort with challenging courses,” said Adaptive Program Director Sandy Metzger. “Alyeska has run the U.S. Alpine Championships for our able-bodied counterparts and always put on a first-class event.”
While Alyeska is familiar with hosting world class athletes, having hosted the U.S. Alpine Championships, the late March event will mark the first time for the U.S. Adaptive Alpine Championships.
“Alyeska Resort is proud to be the host venue of the 2011 U.S. Adaptive Alpine Championships,” said Alyeska Resort Ski Area General Manager Di Hiibner. “Our experience with the U.S. Alpine Championships in 2004, 2007 and 2009 was so positive, and it will be quite rewarding to be able to contribute to the success of the Adaptive Championships and all the athletes involved next spring.”
The weeklong event will consist of all five disciplines, with athletes arriving on Sunday, March 20 for two days of downhill training before commencing the U.S. Championships on Wednesday, March 23 with the downhill.
Looking to spark the younger generations of adaptive alpine athletes will be U.S. Adaptive Ski Team members and Paralympic medalists Danelle Umstead (Taos, NM; visually impaired), Alana Nichols (Farmington, NM; sit-ski), and “The Story” athlete Stephani Victor (Park City, UT; sit-ski) among others.
The 2011 U.S. Adaptive Alpine Championships will conclude on Sunday, March 27 with the slalom.
