Well it appears all those miserable, cold summer days in Southern California this year have finally paid off – winter showed itself in a big way last night, continuing into this morning at Mammoth Mountain. Several inches of snow blessed our favorite Eastern Sierra ski resort during the recent storm cycle, with more snow on the way in the next few days.
Check out the slide show of pictures taken today compliments of Mammoth Mountain:
No your eyes aren’t deceiving you – Mammoth really was in the midst of a ‘white out’ on October 5th (check the date on the sign). The first lifts aren’t even scheduled to run until November 11th, but who knows what will happen if storms like these keep up…
And sure, fall is supposed to be about watching golden foliage and appreciating the changing of the seasons, but who cares when you can get the beauty of snow-covered trees AND satisfy your missed powder cravings!
Soon this view of Chair 1 will be filled with all sorts of excited winter sports enthusiasts. Racers will line the timing hut pictured above, and if all goes according to plan, we might even see some of the famed “Pineapple Express” snow take over at Mammoth this season.
By the way folks, Mammoth opened October 16th last year… A lot can change in eleven days for a ski resort – so let’s cross our fingers Mammoth can best last season’s opening date and have us skiing by – oh let’s say Columbus Day?
