Colorado’s Loveland Ski Area and Arapahoe Basin Ski Area announced their opening dates on Saturday with Loveland starting on Sunday and Arapahoe Basin cranking up on Monday.

Sunday River Resort in Maine temporarily stole the traditional Colorado frontrunners’ spotlight by opening late Friday afternoon. Sunday River, however, may stay open just for the weekend and close during next week. Both Loveland and Arapahoe Basin plan to stay open seven days a week after their opening days.

Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are located near each other along the Continental Divide. In his blog, Araphoe Basin chief operating officer Alan Henceroth reported 7 inches of new natural snow on Saturday to supplement weeks of snowmaking efforts.

Loveland won the “race to open” between the two nearby resorts from 1999-2005. Arapahoe Basin won in 2006 and 2007, then the ski areas tied in 2008. Along with opening first last season, Loveland has now claimed the bragging rights for two straight seasons.
