The FIS Snowboard World Cup season kicks off this weekend in London with the Freeze Festival, but a familiar face looks to be noticeably absent from the contest festivities. Perennial podium favorite and four-time World Cup big air champion Stefan Gimpl of Austria has announced his retirement from the circuit.

The 30-year-old Gimpl told Austria Press Agency on Wednesday that he plans to focus on his passions for film and photograhy as well as a book project.

Gimpl said “it’s time to give the floor to younger athletes.”
