New snow during the past week in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah has prompted Snowbird Ski Resort on Wednesday to move up its ski-season opening day to Saturday from Nov. 20. As of Wednesday, the resort had recorded 53 inches of natural snow for the season.

Snowbird will open Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Aerial Tram, Gadzoom chairlift, and Chickadee lift in operation. The Little Cottonwood Canyon resort’s move to this Saturday gives Utah three straight opening days for different resorts to start the state’s ski season. In nearby Big Cottonwood Canyon, Brighton Resort plans to open on Thursday and Solitude Mountain Resort follows on Friday.

“The wait is over for what is sure to be a fantastic 40th season of skiing and riding at Snowbird,” said Snowbird president Bob Bonar. “The combination of recent snowfall, cold temperatures and a promising forecast should help us work towards opening additional terrain leading up to Thanksgiving week.”
