GEORGETOWN, Colo. (AP) – A man from Golden is dead after being buried in an avalanche in a popular backcountry ski area.
The slide happened around 1 p.m. Sunday in the Dry Gulch area near Interstate 70 and U.S. 6 near the Continental Divide.
The Clear Creek County sheriff’s office said Kyle Shellberg of Golden was buried while skiing down a gully. His skiing partner, Justin Latici, saw him being swept away and then also got caught in the slide himself.
After digging himself out, Latici was able to find Shellberg after about 15 to 20 minutes using an avalanche beacon. He dug his friend out of the snow and administered CPR. An emergency room doctor who happened to see the avalanche also came to help but pronounced Shellberg dead.
