Wondering how to burn off the holiday calories…

Learning to ski or snowboard offers a way to get some winter outdoor exercise and burn calories, according to organizers of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. Research cited by organizers indicates that a 155 pound adult can burn 422 calories an hour skiing at a moderate speed and a 70 pound youth can burn almost 185 calories at a moderate speed. An adult between 110 – 200 pounds can burn between 250 – 630 calories per hour snowboarding. More details are available at skiandsnowboardmonth.org.

Resorts in 34 states are offering programs during January to get children and adults out on the slopes to learn an outdoor winter activity.  The website provides links to learning programs throughout the U.S.  Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month provides an opportunity for consumers to take lessons at reduced rates or, in some cases, free of charge. 

“The best way to learn how to ski or snowboard is to take lessons from a professional instructor who is trained to provide state-of-the-art information and technique” said Mary Jo Tarallo, director of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. “We advise people to resist the temptation to learn from a friend, family member or significant other”.

More than 300 resorts from Alaska to North Carolina are participating in Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. Programs vary depending on the location.

“Childhood obesity is at an all time high in the U.S. and people tend to be more sedentary in the winter,” added Tarallo. “Our slogan is ‘Humans Were Never Meant to Hibernate’. We hope that children and adults will look at skiing and snowboarding as a way to be active all year long.”

Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month is an industry initiative organized by the National Ski Areas Association, the Professional Ski Instructors of America, the American Association of Snowboard Instructors, SnowSports Industries America, the National Ski Patrol, numerous state and regional resort associations, rep associations, retailers and the snow sports media.
