For the past two years, Dutch film company Thumbed Productions have been working on an independent windsurf- and skimovie, named ‘Flip a Coin.’ A movie that goes beyond the sports themselves and which seperates itself from other movies by a unique concept. Filmmaker Maarten Kempen is reluctant to give away information: ‘We’d love to tell you all about the concept now, but we’ll give it a little wait until we are closer to the release of the movie in February 2011. The concept behind the film is unique and same goes for the way this movie is created. We want to be first. Our wish is to create something pure, something that strikes people.’
Also Dutch is one of the two main characters of the movie, Sven Akerboom, ex-professional windsurfer. ‘The creators of the film followed me on trips to France, Thailand and Australia where we’ve shot some amazing footage. I think it’s important to note that this movie goes beyond just plain action of the sports. Although I am not an actor, the creators of the film have found a solution to tell the story in a convincing way. That’s all I can say about it for now, but I think once you see the trailer, you’ll want to see the movie as well. This film is not about people who think they are super cool because they ski or surf, this film will be pure and goes beyond the sports themselves. That’s also the reason why I see this film as a good opportunity to promote the sport amongst a wide audience.’
The opposing character of Sven Akerboom is Norwegian professional skicrosser Thomas Borge Lie. Both gentlemen fulfill a role in a story full of contrast, of which snow, water and action only form a visual hull.
