SMS riders Shaw and Novello find podiums at Mt. Hood
Mount Hood, Ore.‹ Stratton Mountain School (SMS) snowboarder Serena Shaw ¹13 took the first major win of her career during the Halfpipe event at the Mount Hood Revolution Tour while SMS rider Phoebe Novello ¹12 claimed her first podium spot in the Slopestyle event. Alumnus James Haffner ¹10 won the men¹s division Slopestyle event and took second in the Halfpipe event.
Shaw won gold on Jan. 10 in the Halfpipe event, where she nailed her frontside 720s and rode with confidence.
Serena Shaw was on point from the start of practice until the end of the
day when she stood atop the podium,² said SMS Snowboard Coach Ian Kirk. ³She
won practice, qualified for finals three points ahead of the next rider, and
finished four points ahead of the second place finisher.²
Novello broke into the finals for two consecutive days. In the Slopestyle
event, she hit the podium with a run consisting of a switch back 180, a
backside 360, gap to boardslide and lipslide to fakie to clinch her second
Her coaches have recognized her talent for years now, and it was great to
hear onlookers taking notice with other riders talking about how good she is
as she dropped in,² said Kirk. ³Many of us are proud of this young ripper,
and she is definitely turning heads.²
SMS Alumnus James Haffner ¹10 also clinched his first podium spot of the
season with the silver medal in the men¹s Halfpipe. He continued his podium
streak by winning the men¹s Slopestyle event the following day.
Haffner handled the icy walls and stomped big spins to stand on the podium
in second place,² said Kirk about Haffner¹s performance in the Halfpipe.
James is on fire this year.²
Several Stratton Mountain School snowboarders will compete next in the Dew
Tour events at Mount Snow beginning on January 20.
