5 Stratton Mountain School racers claim podium spots at Magic Mountain

Five SMS JIII racers claim podium spots at Magic Mountain
Magic Mountain, Vt.‹Stratton Mountain School (SMS) racers swept the girls
podium and earned the top two spots at the Southern Vermont Council (SVC)
Slalom race on Jan. 16 at Magic Mountain, an Eastern Regional Series (ERS)
qualifier. Accordingly, SMS athletes earned 12 of the 13 spots allotted to
the SVC for the ERS, a race for the top eastern region athletes.

Finn McNamara ¹14 won the boys¹ division at Magic, skiing the fastest time
during the second run of the race. His total time beat teammate Jimmy Fava
¹14, who earned second overall. Fava, however, had the fastest time on the
course during the first run. SMS racer George Steffey ¹15 just missed the
podium for the day and claimed a fourth-place result.

For the girls¹ division, Lara Lathrop ¹14 dominated the race during both
runs and won by more than two seconds. Teammate Payton Alexander ¹15 was her
closest contender, claiming second place, and Leah Fowler ¹14 rounded out
the podium with third place. SMS continued to dominate, however, and claimed
fourth place with Piera Hudson ¹14, fifth place by Hope Heffernan ¹15 and
Amanda Steffey ¹15 earned seventh place.

The event was the last of the qualifiers for ERS. SVC awarded 12 spots to
SMS athletes who will compete in the ERS event at Mount Sunapee on Jan. 22
and 23. Five SMS boys and seven SMS girls were named to the ERS team. In
order of current rank, McNamara, Fava, Brendan O¹Keefe ¹15, Holland Doshier
¹14 and George Steffey will represent the boys. Alexander, Lathrop, Montana
Marzario ¹14, Hudson, Fowler, Amanda Steffey and Heffernan will attend for
the girls.
