Day One: Amazing Weather, Even Better Riding

The first stop of the 2011 The North Face Masters of Snowboarding presented by PrimaLoft got off to an incredible start today at Snowbird. The weather was spectacular as competitors took to the hill bathed in glorious sunshine. A welcome change from the constant bombardment of snow and cloudy days of last year’s tour, this year started off with a more spring-like vibe. The crowd was cheering, blowing their vuvuzuela’s and ringing a dairy’s worth of cowbells as both the men and women sent it big on Silver Fox.

“I’m absolutely blown away by the level of riding,” said Competition Director Patrick Brennan. “We wouldn’t be here year after year without these talented athletes.”

With a large field of 76 men, it was a day filled with pow slashes, cliff drops and mind-blowing straight lines. Finishing in first place on the first day for the men was Josh Warnick with a score of 86.33. Matt Maloley was right on his heels with a score of 84.67, and Ryland Bell’s run included some high speeds and a super stylie 360 off of a cliff to land him in third place.

“It was a fantastic first day,” said Rob Kingwill of Jackson Hole, WY who tied for 13th. “This was my third time competing in the event at Snowbird, and it’s a really fun venue with lots of features.”

“Every year it gets better and better; we are really stoked on everyone’s runs. The level of competition makes it harder for us, but it’s great to see everyone improve,” said Head Judge Tom Burt.

Crested Butte’s Mary Boddington led the women’s field at the end of the day with an 83.00, followed by Salt Lake City local Kaitlin Elliot with an 82.33, and last year’s overall champ Shannan Yates with an 80.33.

“It was really fun and the weather was awesome,” said Mary Boddington. “I’m as stoked as possible, I was confident I’d do well, but I didn’t know I was gonna make it first. For tomorrow, my plan is to rest up, and remember that is for fun.”
