Carlo Janka has been fighting fitness issues all year long. As a result, the defending Championship title holder in the Giant Slalom has headed back to his home but will return to defend his title next Friday, Feb 18th. He will miss the Downhill and Super Combined events.
He contracted a virus earlier in the year and was diagnosed with changes in his heart rate and decrease in physical abilities. This occured in December and he kept this knowledge from the public.
“After assessing the situation with a number of heart specialists it was decided with Carlo to postpone further treatment until the end of the season as there was no risk to his health,” a statement from his team said.
“The deliberate retention of this information from the public was necessary to avoid bringing unnecessary stress and disruption to the race preparations.
“Because of his current condition, the leaders of the delegation have decided with Carlo that he will miss out on the downhill and super combined. Carlos will focus on the giant slalom.”
