Whoa, that was sport at its best. Lindsey Vonn notched the 10th Audi FIS Alpine World Cup crystal globe of her career today by holding off a surging Tina Maze and claim the 2011 super combined title by eight points.
Going into today everyone was thinking it was a classic Vonn/Riesch Battle Royal and it was, but Maze won the slalom leg to take the race win with Vonn second and Riesch (the slalom Olympic gold medalist) third both in the race and season-long SC standings.
The last time I saw LV jump around like that in the finish was at World Cup Finals last year.
“It was a great day. I knew that it was really close with the points and I knew I had to ski great slalom run to get the title. I don’t think it was my best slalom run, but I was aggressive the whole way and that was my goal. Super combined titles are not easy to win because there are only three races so you can’t make any mistakes.”
Here’s a breakdown of LV’s titles:
Overall – 2008, 2009, 2010
Downhill – 2008, 2009, 2010
Super G – 2009, 2010
Super Combined – 2010, 2011
Downhill is on tap for tomorrow and LV leads Maria by 103 points in that title chase. If she comes out holding that lead by 100, chalk up one more title.
