The 2011 Tough Mountain Challenge at Sunday River Ski Resort is scheduled for Saturday, July 23. The Tough Mountain Challenge, an outdoor obstacle race with 15 distinct challenges over three miles of alpine terrain starting in the South Ridge base area, is open to 500 participants. In addition to new obstacles, Sunday River is also adding two categories—one for teams of two and another for teams of four.
Created last year, the Tough Mountain Challenge pits some of Sunday River’s most well known mountain features against the men and women brave enough to take them on. This year, racers can expect an even longer course with up to five new obstacles designed to create an even tougher challenge. Details on the course will be announced later this spring.
Race divisions for the Tough Mountain Challenge include men, women, duos, and teams [define teams…teams of four? Corporate teams?]. Participants’ costumes will also be taken into consideration.
The Tough Mountain Challenge is open to adults 21 and older and will include an after party.
Favorites from last year’s course include:
• Hurricane Alley—a sprint through a battering ram of Sunday River’s most powerful snowguns.
• Suicide Sprint—a quarter mile up-mountain dash.
• The Deadliest Catch—a scramble up a 200-foot net crossing the resort’s Barker Pond.
• Ring of Fire—a fitting end to the obstacle madness.
Registration for the Tough Mountain Challenge is now live through www.active.com. Cost is $49 per person and the entry fee includes a race t-shirt and a commemorative finish mug filled with beer.
