Aspen teen Torin Yater-Wallace wins French world cup

15 year old Torin Yater-Wallace from Basalt, CO, topped the men’s halfpipe skiing podium in the first of two World Cup halfpipe competitions Sunday in La Plagne. Also landing on the podium for the U.S. was Devin Logan (West Dover, VT) with two seconds in the women’s contests and David Wise second and third in the men’s.

Yater-Wallace led the U.S. charge topping an impressive field with many of the skiers coming over from the European X Games in nearby Tignes earlier this week.  The X Games medalist won the first of two events Sunday.

Logan led the U.S. women, finishing second in both competitions behind Canada’s Sarah Burke. Logan was joined by Annalisa Drew (Andover, MA) in10th in the morning then seventh Sunday evening.

David Wise (Reno, NV) skied his way onto both podiums, finishing third in the morning and second at night under the lights.

Joss Christensen (Park City, UT) and Wing Tai Barrymore (Hailey, ID) competed in the first World Cup contest, finishing sixth and 13th respectively. Penn Lukens (Steamboat Springs, CO) placed 10th in the second event.

Burke swept both of Sunday’s World Cup events. Kevin Rolland of France was the men’s winner in the evening competition.

Sunday was the final day of freestyle World Cup competition for the 2011 season. The U.S. Freestyle Ski Team athletes now head to Stratton Mountain, VT for the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships beginning Thursday with the men’s and women’s halfpipe contest on Saturday, March 26.
