The World Ski and Snowboarding Festival is less than two short weeks away. Stacked with a free concert series presented by AXE, a pro photographer showdown, a professional film making battle, parties, events, action and more, this years festival promisses to be the best one ever! check out some of the events below.
The AXE Concert Series is one of the most highly attended and popular events of the Festival, and this year’s line-up is sure to impress and entertain people of all ages and all musical tastes. “Girls and music are a big part of our guy’s life,” explains Greg Major, Senior Brand Building Manager for AXE Canada. “This festival gives him the opportunity to connect with both in an amazing setting, which we’re happy to support.”The AXE Concert Series runs the full 10 days of the Festival, from April 15th to 24th, and rocks out on the main stage, with Whistler and Blackcomb mountains providing the awe-inspiring backdrop, from 2.30pm – 5.30pm every day. The Concert Series will be presenting amazing acts such as Ontario’s own indie rockers Tokyo Police Club, New York’s eclectic Gogol Bordello, Vancouver’s cult-followed Black Mountain, musical masterminds Fort Knox Five and Whistler’s pride of the decks and Mat the Alien. Recently more have been added the docket: Fort Knox Five, Black Mountain and Tokyo Police Club, Broken Social Scene, Dinasaure Bones, Gogol Bordello and Ozomatli. Get your dance shoes on, it’s going to be sweet.
OLYMPUS is back to head the Pro Photographer Showdown, the preeminent action sports photography competition in the world. This year has already attracted an incredible diversity in photographers and subject matter. Event Producer Lilli Clark says that “we’ve been receiving interest from surf, skate, ski and snowboard photographers from ALL over the world. Interest has come from Australia, Munich, California, France and of course Canada. The March 1st deadline for initial submissions is fast approaching, and we’re looking forward to another stellar year at the OLYMPUS Pro Photographer Showdown”. With a prize pool of $17,000 this is no minor photography competition.
The highly anticipated 10 year anniversary of the excessively popular 72hr Filmmaker Showdown, Film 10, has released the nominations for the Awards Gala to be held on Monday April 18th. Judging will be performed by a panel of 10-15 Industry Experts and die-hard Filmmaking Fans.
The newest addition to the mix, Intersection, has launched its call for interest. Geared towards professional filmmaking companies, Intersection is an opportunity for action sports fanatics to step back into the limelight at Whistler and show us how the ski and snowboard films are really made. Not for the faint-hearted, the $15,000 1st prize will go to the team that best integrates the compulsory elements of 30 seconds of in-bound footage, 30 seconds of park footage, 75% of entire footage on snow, shot within 100km of Whistler, and all shot during the heart-racing, caffeine fuelled 7 days allocated during the Festival. The love child of ski, snowboard, film and adrenaline, this event is sure to be a show-stopper.
