Stratton Mountain School freshman Piera Hudson, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, has been on the world tour this early spring, competing in two of the most competitive ski racing series in the world for junior racers.

Hudson traveled to Folgaria, Italy for the Trofeo Topolino alpine skiing children’s games March 18th and 19th. Often considered the “mini winter Olympics” for J3 racers (ages 13 – 14),  Hudson competed in Slalom (SL), and took 14th place against nearly 80 of the best junior alpine ski racers in the world. She competed in Giant Slalom (GS) and placed 27th.

April 8, 9, 10, Hudson traveled to Whistler to compete in the Whistler Cup, an international competition featuring nearly 100 of the best junior racers from more than 20 countries around the world. On April 8, Hudson finished fourth in Super-G.

In 2010, Hudson took 16th in the Whistler Super-G.

SMS also sent 25 snowboarders to USASA Nationals this month.  Twenty-five Stratton Mountain School snowboard team athletes traveled to USASA Nationals in Copper Mountain, Colorado March 30 – April 9 to compete against snowboarders from around the country.

“I want to thank the SMS team for their hard work this season and at Nationals,” said SMS Snowboard Program Director Ross Powers. “It’s been great working with them all this winter. I look forward to spring, summer camps and next season!”

Competitors took to the Boardercross (BX) track, Slalom (SL), Giant Slalom (GS), Slopestyle (SS) and Halfpipe (HP). Sophomore Josh Cohen, Bondville, Vt., finished second overall for his 14-15 age group for his performance in all five events. And, seventh-grader Xander Raith, Barnard, Vt., finished second overall for the 12-13 year-old age group.
