Five-time US Champ and Olympian, Tommy Ford (Bend, OR), chats with US Ski news and discusses his summer plans.
You had said this season was filled with highs and lows. How did it feel to end the 2011 season with your fifth U.S. Championship?
It always feels good to end on a high note. After a long season of some good races and some difficult races to ski balanced on soft snow is a good feeling to have at the end of the season before I start school.
Now that winter is over and the skis have their summer/travel wax on them, what are your plans in the next few weeks?
I’ll be studying at Dartmouth College for about two months until June when I’ll be on snow again and start training a bit. But mostly resting, keeping my mind off the sport a little bit and on different things.
What are your goals for the summer training months?
I don’t really make goals. I have a little more volume in the summer and just kind of be on my skis more often and get stronger in the gym. Hopefully I can do that when I’m off the snow.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t skiing?
I like to rock climb, skateboard, take pictures and hang out with friends – normal things.
You made some really cool videos this season, any plans for making some more this summer?
I’m always using a camera, either taking pictures or filming. It depends on what I have to work with to film, so we will see. I am taking a film class, which should be pretty cool – learning the basics of film.
