On June 25th and 26th Lee Cation is hosting the Whistler Longboarding Festival at the Whistler Sliding Centre.
This event is full of riders racing down 330 vertical metres over about 1.6 km. About 128 athletes strapped with leather suits and gloves are projected to compete during the weekend and take on the eight hairpin corners at speeds of about 100 km. Cation states “it’s just an unbelievable setting for photos and video”. The danger involved in the race adds to the thrill of the sport. Saturday is training day and closed to the public, but Sunday the 26th is open for all viewers to watch this exciting competition take place.
Although the festival is mainly athlete-driven, it lays down a strong base for drink or clothing industries to sponsor longboard races in the future. Cation’s expectations for the festival and the future of the sport are very high. He states, “Year one will be all road, and year two I hope to have more festival style with more events and add-ons to the main event”.
This event is a good start to building a strong base for the sport of longboarding. Canada is the main base for longboarding with its large mountains, but other places with large mountain regions such as California have started to develop a liking for longboarding.
This event is one to mark on your calendars!
