Yosemite’s Half Dome is reopening after a hard winter and heavy snow kept it closed longer than usual. Park officials have said that access to the cables leading to the summit will open for the season this Wednesday, June 22, 2011.
The difficult climb, 17 miles round trip and 4,800 feet of elevation, all on a steep granite face, has been made easier by the addition of cables and wooden planks in the last 400-foot stretch to the summit, allowing climbers to forego rock-climbing equipment.
Climbers wishing to ascend the summit must apply for a permit, but more casual hikers can just take the trail to the base of Half-Dome.
