Go Skateboarding Day celebration even in Afghanistan!

Did you know it was Go Skateboarding Day today? Do you even know what it means and how it came about? I know, me neither and I feel bad since skateboarding is basically the the snowboarding of the streets. And for that matter, the surfing of the streets. Skating and Boarding communities tend to like each other as you know, having events like Bonfire Pipe to Pipe (the 14th Annual Bonfire Pipe to Pipe is happening July 10) that incorporate snowboarding and skateboarding all at once.

Go Skateboarding Day began in 2004 by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC). This day wants everyone to get out and go skateboarding. Every year, Go Skateboarding Day happens on June 21, the first day of summer. Skateboarders everywhere are holding fundraisers, protests, demos an contests from skateparks to the streets. The purpose is to bring together the skateboarding community from around the entire world.

So you see, this day of skating celebration is not only happening in America. Kids of Afghanistan are hitting the streets and their respective skateboarding schools!  I love this! The picture above, courtesy of  S. Sabawoon / EPA and the MSNBC Photo Blog, is of kids skating it up in Afghanistan. Are the girls wearing press passes around their necks? Hmmm, well anyways it’s awesome.

Do you want to get out and celebrate too? Go check out all the events from around the globe at the Go Skateboarding Day website at: http://www.goskateboardingday.org/.

I would go out myself and rock out on maybe a longboard, however, the only thing I was able to conquer when I was a kid was Michael J. Fox’s famous skateboard flip grab as seen in “Back To The Future.” Yeah, sorry I’m just not that cool for school. I’m just really scared of hurting myself. Yes, I know I can wear pads but still…
