Hortense Morris wanted to celebrate her 99th birthday by doing something more exciting then another birthday party, and decided to try kayaking. Armed with her “I’ll try anything once” attitude and accompanied by her grandson who is a guide for Kayak Amelia, her and her family paddled along the Fort George River in Florida.

They paddled up against the current, then back down it, gliding around a couple of islands. The 99 year old didn’t just sit and enjoy the ride either. She states, “I paddled off and on. I wasn’t lazy.”

Though she is getting older, her attitude remains young and bold as she had only one word for her sister-in-law, Alma Del Valle, who refused to get out on the water: “Sissy.” At the conclusion of the trip Hortense confessed that she couldn’t wait to tell everyone back in her retirement community about her experience. She commented, “It was wonderful. I would love to do it again.”

Next year she will be turning 100, and she already has ideas about topping this birthday and celebrating with a bang. “I’ve never been been skydiving,” she said.
