IFSC 2011 Climbing World Championships

The IFSC Climbing World Championships will start next week in Trentino Italy. Events will take place from July 14th to the 24th. Competitions will be held in bouldering, lead and speed climbing. There will also be the Paraplegic competition from the 16th-19th of July.

Lead rope climbing is the base of climbing. In this competition climbers are not allowed to see the route before their climb. Scores are based on how high they make it up the climb. Only the strongest climbers can reach the summit while others fall on their accent to the top.

The Bouldering competition consists of no ropes and the climbs do not exceed 4.5 meters. Reaching the top is the goal but climbers have multiple chances to reach the top but the number of attempts is accounted into the score.

Speed climbing is the other main event at the competition. There is a set route and there are world records. The Men’s record is 6.64 and the Women’s 9.04. In the finals competitors compete in a head to head elimination round till a champion is crowned.

The competitors are extra jazzed about this year competition because sport climbing in the on the short list for the 2020 Olympics games. Sport Climbing is one of the eight events still on the short list. The final decision of which of the eight events will make the Olympics will be made in 2013.
