Grizzly Bear in Yellowstone Park attacks man to defend cubs

Unfortunately, this Grizzly attack story does not have a happy ending.

A male hiker was attacked and killed by a grizzly bear on Wednesday morning in Yellowstone National Park. The man was hiking with his wife when according to the National Park Service as reported on CNN, “surprised a female bear with her cubs…(and then) the bear attacked and fatally wounded the man in an attempt to defend her cubs.” The attack happened specifically on the Wapiti Lake Trail. The hikers wife unharmed.

Who is to say how this male hiker “surprised” the female grizzly bear, however I can say that it better had been by complete accident. It usually is safe to say that you NEVER approach many animals, especially a grizzly bear, when they are with their small ones. I am interested in finding out what type of “surprise” happened, regardless it is still horrible.

There has not been a fatality caused by a bear attack in Yellowstone since 1986.
