Polish snowboarding champion Paulina Ligocka has announced that she is switching to compete for Germany.
Ligocka, who was the standard bearer for the Polish team at the 2006 Winter Olympics, says this decision was based on continuing frustration with the administration of the Polish Snowboarding Association.
“It’s a cry of despair,” she said. In a previous interview with Polish Radio last year, Ligocka explained that she had “strongly criticized” the leadership of the Polish Snowboarding Association. When she discovered that the Polish Ministry of Sport had excluded her from this year’s Olympic squad, she made the decision to switch.
She says, “The German federation has given me a chance to realize my dreams,” which include the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. She hopes her fans will understand and continue to support her even as she rides for Germany.
