The Last Friday Video Fun: Old Style Norwegian Telemark Skiing

Well folks, this is the last Friday Video Fun. I know, don’t be sad. You can catch some future findings at backonthemountain.com.

I figured the best way to closeout this weekly posting is with a representation of skiing in its roots, i.e Vikings. As you know (or if you don’t know), Vikings skied. They are the ones who essentially invented skiing. I mean, one of the Old Norse Gods is ULLR is depicted on skis and many ski resorts around the world host annual ULLR Festivals. So get ready to see some vintage skiing at its best in the land of Scandinavia!

My video finding is titled by youtube user crtUK as, “Old Style Telemark.” It features original Norwegian telemark skiing with skiers using equipment from the 1860s such as a single wooden pole or lurk (see picture above). Besides being amazed from the vintage footage itself, get ready to also enjoy some old school skiing tricks and jumps. Before there were constructed terrain parks, old timers used buildings to jump off and horse carriages to fly over. We all know many still use unconventional terrain methods today but nothing says danger like flying off the lodge, which I have not seen recently.

No guts, no glory!
