RENO, NV - Friday afternoon during The National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada a P-51 Mustang aircraft being flown by pilot Jimmy Leeward, 74, of Ocala, Fla crashed into the box seating area for spectators shortly after putting out a mayday call.

The horrific event was captured by a spectator in the grandstands, who posted a video of the plane spiraling into the ground on YouTube shortly after the crash occured.

Officials reported the possibility of “mass casualties” yesterday afternoon, and as of this morning 3 people (including the pilot) have been declared dead — with over 50 severely injured.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper spoke with several eye whitnesses yesterday evening, who stated that they could see something was wrong with the aircraft, and that it nearly went into the grandstands where the bulk of the spectators were observing the race. They attributed the pilots actions during his last moments of flight to preventing even greater devastation.
