Himalayan Earthquake: Death Toll at 53

GANGTOK, INDIA – Rescue workers are scrambling to respond to the widespread destruction throughout the countryside due to Sunday evening’s 6.9 magnitude earthquake which struck in the Himalayan Region. The rescuers are using every tool at their disposal including helicopters and earth moving constuction equipmentment in an effort to reach injured indidivudals in the remote farm towns in the areas where the quake hit.

The Associated Press has reported this morning a the death toll to be at 53, with more than 100,000 homes damaged, throughout northeast India, Nepal and Tibet.

With so many roads out, tranportation for food and first aid supplies will be forced to rely heavily on air support to reach these shattered communities.
