Nakiska Ski Area will start the Canadian 2011-12 ski season by opening on Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Skiing will be off the Gold Express Chair on three trails: Upper Mapmaker, Middle Mapmaker and Big Bear. Skiers will upload and download on the Olympic Express Chair.

The resort plans to be open only on weekends until regular lift operations begin in December. The ski area touts its proximity to Calgary as the nearest resort to the city at just more than 50 miles away by car. Nakiska is best known as the venue for the alpine-skiing events during the 1988 Winter Olympics. Legendary racer Alberto Tomba of Italy won two gold medals at Nakiska.
