The 10th anniversary of the legendary week long Wängl Tängl snowboard, skateboard, music and art ‘Contest-ival’ is still a few months away, but the event is already shaping up to be one of the best yet. Scheduled for March 17th-24th in Mayrhofen, Austria, organizers have announced a number of new events and format changes that will make the event the biggest and most accessible party to date. Additionally, Vans has been introduced at the event’s title sponsor for 2012.

One of the biggest changes announced is that the 2012 Vans Wängl Tängl will be held as an open qualification event to create the heaviest gathering of shred crews on the continent at the notorious Vans Penken Park, customized for the event with the Red Bull End Section by Ästhetikers Steve Gruber and Wolle Nyvelt. Previously “invite only,” organizers hope the new format will create an opportunity for lesser-known crews across Europe to gain notoriety. Three person teams can register on a first come first served basis beginning December 1, 2011.

The 16-team, head-to-head, knockout format Tängl Team main event is the highlight of the mountain based snowboard contest. Taking inspiration from its surfing counterpart, no team is eliminated in the first round giving everyone a second chance to go for the 15,000 Euro ($21,000 USD) total prize pool. As usual, the event will be designed by riders for riders, incorporating the unique “one team, one score” judging system.

Skating will also take a new direction in 2012. Though organizers have remained tight-lipped about the extent of the changes, they have announced the event will be held at a new location and have promised more details in the coming weeks.

Finally, music and art will remain an integral part of the event in 2012. Though few details have been released about this year’s musical talent, previous artists have included: Millencolin, Masta Ace, Edo G, Danny Breaks, Big Shug, Texta, S.K. Invitational, Akrobatik, Mr Lif, Waxolutionists, and DJ Phekt.

Similarly, details about the art component at this year’s event are expected in the coming weeks.
