Kandahar 2012 Kicks off in Chamonix Mount Blanc

Posted By: The Ski Channel on January 30, 2012 11:10 am

The world cup circuit has arrived at the foot of the Mount-Blanc for one of the more unique stages of the Men’s World Cup. There will be nearly 40,000 spectators in attendance for the downhill and super combined competitions. The show begins on February 3rd and continues through the 5th making the Chamnoix Mount-Blanc Valley the place to be.

The small French community has high hopes that 2012 will be the year they achieve a long-awaited victory, as the Verte des Houches has not seen a French win since 1968. The French public, despite a slight disappointment with the forfeit of this stage by Jean-Baptiste Grange, injured in Schaldming, will be cheering for Alexis Pinturault the young hopeful who doesn’t cease to amaze us with his talent. He placed 4th, at the foot of the podium, in Wengen, Switzerland.

The French will also be rooting for the young up-and-coming French skiers in downhill: Johan Clarey and Adrien Théaux, 6th and 14th respectively in the current world cup rankings may surprise us. David Poisson, Yannick Bertrand or Guillermo Fayed, the local on the stage, are potential outsiders!

The Croatian Ivica Kostelic is still the world cup leader in slalom. Winner of the super combined on the Verte des Houches in 2011 he will try for two consecutive wins in Chamonix and remains the favorite for a 2nd consecutive crystal globe!

After 18 race seasons Didier Cuche will take his final bow at the end of this winter. After his victory this past weekend in Garmisch thousands of Swiss supporters are expected to watch the skier on his last French descent not too far from home, they will cheer on this great champion, 2011 winner on the Verte des Houches. After this victory he is placed 1st in the overall standings followed by his teammate Beat Feuz.
