Mountain High is hosting the Cholula Triple Air competition this upcoming weekend on February 4th. The big air competition is held in memory of Chuck Allen. You may remember hearing about Chuck last month during our coverage of the 2nd Annual Chuck Allen Memorial Ride Day at Bear Mountain Resort . Chuck contributed a great deal in his lifetime to the sports of snowboarding and surfing and is renowned across Southern California. A longtime high school surf coach in southern California, Chuck was one of the most passionate board sports enthusiasts of his era and worked tirelessly throughout his life to establish core standards for each discipline. Chuck passed away earlier last year on February 14, 2011, after succumbing to a hard-fought battle against emphysema at 74 years of age.
The competition at Mountain High held in Chuck’s honor is going to be a fantastic event, and is unlike any other big air event of its kind. Rather than featuring one big jump, skiers and snowboarders are pitted against three gigantic kickers making their landings and execution critical. Riders are scored on their best of two runs and the top 10 finishers make their way to the finals where awards are paid out to 5th place. For 14 straight years riders like Shaun White, Zak Hale and Keegan Valaika have competed. There is a $20,000 on the line and this year first place takes home $5,000 in the Men’s Snowboarding Division, $3,500 in Open Skiing, and $2,000 in Women’s Snowboarding.
Says John McColly, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, “This is our biggest event of the season and with $5,000 on the line for first place, you know there is going to be some heavy competition.”
New for this year, The Cholula Triple Air has been upgraded to a 3 star Ticket To Ride event. What does that mean? The TTR standard is what competitive snowboarders use to rank themselves against each other and gain entry into events like the Grand Prix and the Olympics. Since the Cholula is now a 3 star TTR event, competitors will earn points towards their overall worldwide ranking.
The Cholula Triple air is an open event, however, space is limited. Interested competitors are strongly encouraged to register ASAP on Friday, February 3rd. You do not want to miss the richest single-day event at Mountain High! Spectators are cordially invited to cheer on the competitors and get in on all the action
