Yesterday was supposed to be a training day. But due to the recent snow fall the organization committee decided Tuesday morning to cancel the first downhill training on the Verte des Houches initially scheduled for Wednesday February 1st.
The 150 volunteers and 4 grooming machines on the piste have been working hard to deliver a Verte in perfect condition for the first and only training run scheduled for Thursday February 2nd at 12 :00pm.
After the injections between Sunday and Monday the run has an under-layer of excellent quality.
The weather forecast is finally announcing winter conditions with severe cold. Perfect for a stage of world cup alpine skiing !
The organizing committee has put two runs at the skier’s disposal, the Planards in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and the Rouge de Maisonneuve in Les Houches, for skiers wishing to train on February 1st.
The Swiss public is expected in large numbers. Thousands of spectators are awaited to applaud the man, for the last time, who has raised himself to mythical status on the legendary Verte des Houches. Didier Cuche, 37 years old will retire from competitive skiing. He made the announcement during a press conference in Kitzbuhel, where has written part of his personal history. Shortly after, he dominated the treacherous Austrian run for the fifth time, exploding the old record by Austrian Franz Klammer (winner in 1975_1976_1977_1984). Since then the man from Neuchatel has been on a world tour of goodbye’s. Winner at Lake Louise, Kitzbuhel and Garmisch, he is coming into the race as the winner. And the chances are high that his massive body will once again be incredible on the piste in Haute-Savoie. But before visualizing his 13th downhill victory (3rd consecutive this season), his main threat will come from his own camp, Beat Feuz.
Croatian Ivica Kostelic is the current world cup leader. The skier from Zagreb holding the big globe is ahead with 905 points. One year after his victory in the super-combined will Kostelic win another ? For the only French stage the French clan is eagerly awaited by numerous fan clubs !
A surprise French victory is always possible ! Two Frenchmen are currently in the top 15 in downhill : Johan Clarey is ranked 6th, Adrien Théaux is 14th. Followed by Yannick Bertrand 19th, Guillermo Fayed 23rd and David Poisson 29th.
Even the super-combined may hold a surprise French victory since Adrien Théaux is currently 6th and Alexis Pinurault is 10th !
