Fresh off his silver medal finish at the 2012 Winter X Games in Snowboardcross, Nick Baumgartner took to the podium again today at the first-ever LG Snowboard FIS World Cup at Blue Mountain in Ontario Canada with a 3rd place finish.
Three was a lucky number for Baumgartner. The 2010 Olympian finished yesterday’s time trials with the 3rd fastest time. He was just half a second (1:07.43) behind the leader, Norwegian Viking Stian Sivertzen (1:06.93). Baumgartner, wearing bib #3 today, solidified 3rd place in a hair splitting, photo finish against David Speiser (2nd, GER). Pierre Vaultier (FRA) took 1st.
“It was hell on snow all day and truly a battle,” said the 2009 World Championship Bronze Medalist. “There was a crash in just about every heat. In the final, I got hit hard and had to carve my way back on to the course and went from 6th to 3rd. I’ll take it.”
Today’s race brought Baumgartner’s 2012 international ranking up to 5th.
Next up, Baumgartner returns state side for The Canyons Grand Prix in Park City, UT from February 9 – 12, 2012.
