Whitney Houston, the artist who sold more than 170 million albums, had seven No. 1 songs, won six Grammy’s and two Emmys has died this afternoon at the age of 48.
A representative of the Beverly Hills police department said she was found in the Beverly Hilton Hotel Saturday afternoon, the site of her mentor Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy Awards party. There are no further details as to the cause of death at this time.
In 2010 Houston admitted to Oprah that by the mid 1990′s, she was using drugs daily, and has talked openly about her drug use. Her tumultous marriage to New Edition singer Bobby Brown was well publicized in the tabloids, and on the couple’s reality TV show. The couple divorced in 2007.
Houston’s passing will surely place a cloud over the annual Grammy Awards, set for tomorrow. Friends and colleagues who saw her last night a a pre-Grammy party said she was in good spirits and are shocked by the news.
Houston was born into the musical world- the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, cousin to Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of icon Aretha Franklin. She is survied by her 19 year old daughter Bobbi Kristina, and ex husband, Bobby Brown.
