Day three of the 2012 Red Bull Cold Rush was forced to be cancelled following an avalanche in the zone that wiped out the snow pack needed for a safe competition. By no means were the unsafe slope conditions due to a lack of effort on the part of the team at Silverton Mountain. Crews had been working tirelessly for weeks to ensure the area was prepped for competition, but unfortunately Mother Nature prevailed over their efforts. After six solid weeks of heavy snowfall, a recent dump and some wind loading caused the slope to slide officials had to make the decision to cancel the cliffs competition. Such is the nature of riding in the backcountry.

Even though the day’s competition was canceled, that didn’t stop the athletes from having a great day on the snow. The entire group of competitors was treated to a day of freeskiing at Silverton. The skiers headed out early in the morning, and made it in time for some fresh snow falling on some already pristine, untouched tree lines!

After a day of carefree shredding, the group gathered at the historic Grand Imperial Hotel in the town of Silverton to review the footage from the first two days of competition — and begin the athlete-fueled voting process. Once scoring has been tabulated, the 2012 Red Bull Cold Rush winners will be announced.
