The action at Stratton Mountain was full-on at the 30th anniversary of the Burton US Open, presented by MINI. The riders headed out to the halfpipe to compete in the semi-finals, where 13 men and 7 women were selected to advance to the main event of snowboarding — the US Open Halfpipe Finals held on Saturday.
There were 16 women competing under blue bird skies for their chance to fill one of the 7 spots in the finals. Elena Hight stood out from the group in the semi-finals, throwing down a winning run that consisted of a backside method, frontside 720 melon grab, Cab 720 mute grab, frontside Indy grab, backside 900 no grab and an alley oop backside rodeo Indy grab to finish off the banger run. The other finalists include Arielle Gold, Gretchen Bleiler, Ellery Hollingsworth, Hannah Teter, Yuki Furihata and Urisna Haller. Kelly Clark, the six-time US Open winner has earned the right to advance straight to the halfpipe finals on Saturday, through a new format created in honor of the 30th anniversary that gives recent winners of the US Open the right to automatically advance to the finals.
On the men’s side, 33 men had two runs to secure on of the 13 coveted final spots. Olympian Greg Bretz finished in first place with a frontside melon, backside inverted 900 mute, frontside 1080 tail grab, Cab 720 mute and a frontside double cork 1080 Indy. The top 5 riders behind Bretz were Danny Davis, Louie Vito, Ryo Aono and Zack Black. Men’s halfpipe champions from the past four US Open events will also join this list of competitors. There is no doubt that Saturday’s halfpipe finals are going to be one of the most exciting days in the events history!
The excitement continues into Friday at the US Open. Slopestyle finals kick off during the day followed by the “Washed Up Cup”, where US Open legends compete in the evening.
All events are free for the public and the weather forecast calls for more sunshine throughout the weekend! If you’re on the East Coast, head out to Stratton Mountain to be a part of history!
