James Malcarne suffered a fatal crash Wednesday evening while skiing at Ski Bowl on Mount Hood, Oregon. The 37-year-old was riding with a group of friends starting at about 5pm. After he didn’t make it to the bottom of a run his friends alerted ski patrol, which began the search at 7:50pm. They recovered Malcarne roughly 10 minuets later near the base of a tree where they attempted CPR. After an unsuccessful attempt, they transported the victim to the resort base where paramedics made further resuscitation efforts, which were also unsuccessful. Officials pronounced him dead at 8:36.
Hoodland Fire District Chief Mic Eby released a statement detailing that while Malcarne was wearing a helmet, he still suffered fatal head injuries. Friends said he was an experienced skier.
This is the second death at Ski Bowl since 1996. A 17-year-old girl also died in a similar accident in January when she hit a tree while snowboarding.
