The Treble Cone resort of Lake Wanaka, New Zealand, announced their exciting calendar for 2012, hosting a medley of events to inspire, challenge, but more importantly enjoy the diverse terrain and features at the South Island’s largest snow resort.

Some highlighted features include the Pump Mini Mountain, now part of a national series of junior development events and expected to attract nationwide competition, and the return of the ICE on the Plaza sculpting contest.

The Pump Mini Mountain weekend event, from September 15-16, is now a part of New Zealand Snow Sports junior development series leading up to the Junior Nationals. The Pump Mini Mountain encourages young skiers and snowboarders under the age of 14 to take on Treble Cone’s freeride terrain with a day of teaching techniques and skills followed by a big mountain competition the next day.

Sunday, July 1 is ICE on the Plaza, an ice sculpting competition where contestants turn a one meter block of ice into art! The carvings will be on display during the first week of July while Friday is judgement day. The winner will take a share of the $1,400 cahs prize pool and Treble Cone day passes.

Treble Cone is featuring an off-mountain twilight cinema showing at Lone Star, Wanaka June 17. Screen selections of short and fun ski and board films from all over the world will be playing to get the snow sport fans pumped for the season ahead.

Younger visitors will love Treble Cone’s TC Cat’s Birthday, a party with games, cake, and the TC Cat’s new mascot is sure to get the party started on the slopes!

July 21 is the popular, local skiing event The Base Triple Comp, a Banked Slalom contest that offers fantastic prizes.

The NZ Snowboarder Banked Slalom returns on July 27 at the challenging Gun Barrel. This leg-burning event is open to all abilities!

A premier event coming to New Zealand August 13-17 is the North Face Freeski Open. Catch top international freeskiers as they tackle the untamed terrain on the Motutapu chutes. New Zealand’s top freeskier Sam Smoothy and Jania Kuzma will be favorites during their homeland hosting of the North Face Freeski Open.

New Zealand’s students will be competing in parallel slalom and giant slalom August 28-29.

The country’s students will take to the slopes August 28-29 for the New Zealand University Snow Games competing in parallel slalom and giant slalom.

Marketing manager Nigel Kerr said it is important to ensure everyone is catered for throughout the season. “There is a really good mix of events this year with tougher challenges and courses for the more serious skiers and riders, events specifically targeted at the youth’s development and plenty on offer for fun family days out,” he said.

Treble Cone will open on June 28, 2012, with celebratory Amisfield bubbles for the first skiers and riders on the lift.
