Cushing Crossing Returns to Squaw

It’s that time again!  Squaw Valley is preparing the lake for this weekend’s 22nd Annual Cushing Crossing this Sunday, April 29th at 1pm.  The yearly pond-skimming party will mark the final day of Squaw’s 2011-2012 season.  Fear not, warm weather warriors, Alpine Meadows, Squaw’s sister resort, will continue operations Friday-Sunday through May 13th for all of your skiing and snowboarding needs.

In the meantime, don’t miss Lake Cushing Crossing!  Participants will be challenged to glide across Cushing Lake, a rather large body of water known for its cold depths.   Anything goes, as long as the vessel used to cross is ski and snowboard-based.  Colossal crashes and huge failures are expected and part of what makes it fun.  Creative costumes are encouraged for those piloting the original contraptions.

Registration will open Sunday at 9am at the KT Base Bar and costs $20.  Don’t delay, because only the first 50 people 18 or older can participate.  And don’t forget your life jacket and helmet!

Watching is half the fun, so if you don’t make the cut, join the crowd on the sidelines and cheer on your favorite skier or rider.  Johnny Moseley and Uncle E will keep things lively as emcees for the event.  It’s going to be tough to impress the judging panel made up of Sherry McConkey, Andy Wirth, Michelle Parker, Tamara McKinney, and Erik Roner.  Participants will be competing in style, grace, creativity, and success crossing the lake.

Awards will be given out at 3pm, and there are some great prizes!  First place will take home a 2012-13 Adult Bronze Season Pass, and the winner of each class—Men’s and Women’s Ski, Men’s and Women’s Snowboard, and Unlimited—will snag $100 cash.  A bonus $100 is on the line for the highest scoring contestant on skinny skis as well as for the man or woman with the most creative—not necessarily successful—crossing.

For those in town for the weekend, hit up the pool party on Saturday at High Camp and check out the KT Base Bar for some sweet tunes.  There’s always something to do at Squaw.
