Skiers and snowboarders came out in full force this weekend to participate in the 6th Annual Sno-Kona Pond Skim held at Mt. Hood Meadows this past Saturday. The Hawaiian themed event encouraged participants to don their most outrageous outfits as they braved the icy cold waters hoping that their skis or snowboard would allow them to successfully skim across the pond without falling in!
One hundred brave competitors took part in the pond skim, and as luck would have it — 70 made it across the 90-foot pond in the first qualifying run. There was a great deal on the line for this year’s competition, as the winning pond-skimmer would receive a trip for two to Hawaii, provided courtesy of All About Hawaii.
In the end, Erik Brown, who was dressed as a high-tech robot landed in third place, performing a rocking robot dance in the winner’s circle. Brown received a $50 gift certificate to Portland’s Bamboo Grove Hawaiian Restaurant for his efforts. Bruce Kuper, who is a five-time veteran of the event, came in 2nd place. Kuper won a Kona Beach Cruiser to go along with his Hawaiian Warrior costume. Tory Robinson, who was dressed up as James Bond ended up winning the competition. During his run, Robinson channeled his inner-agent to free some women in distress and kill the villain. He finished by dropping to his knee and proposing to girlfriend Sabrina LoGood, who excitedly accepted his offer!
Judges Matt Zaffino of KGW, Bozyk from 105.9 the Brew, Squid from 947 along with Pamela from Popina Swimwear and Brad from All About Hawaii couldn’t resist the series of theatrics from Robinson and helped guarantee a great start for the young couple’s future together. Nothing says, “I love you” like a trip to paradise!
Natalie Welsch made the best impression as a women contestant with her “Victoria’s Secret Angel Fish” costume and received a $250 Popina Swimwear gift certificate.
Clayton Ewen (a whoopee cushion) and Lowell Neal (a 6’2” Oompa Loompa) got best splash prizes and received $50 Mt. Hood Meadows gift cards.
Best costumer awards went to St. John Laughlin’s “Who’s your Daddy” with five baby (dolls) and luggage attached; and Kirk Zach dressed as a mug of Kona brew. Each received $50 Meadows gift cards.
Overall, the event was huge party with surf-style music provided by The Retro Active Gamma Rays. There was also a Popina Swimwear Fashion Show put on by Jillian Rabe Productions. Kona Brewing, All About Hawaii, KEEN, Popina Swimwear, Tim’s Cascade Snacks and Jillian Rabe Productions sponsored the event.
