Olympic Athletes Participate in Airport Games

As a prelude to the summer of the 2012 Summer Olympics and European Football Championships, Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS) is taking a creative approach to promoting the highly anticipated events.  On May 6, 2012, sports fans in Europe flying into or out of this German airport will get a surprise in the terminal.  Olympic participants and athletes will be showcasing various sports in the passenger area of the airport from 11am to 6pm.

Travelers are invited to join in the games as the athletes play tennis, soccer, table tennis, rowing, headis—table tennis played with your head, and crossboccia–boccia played with bean-bag like balls in a borderless, 3-dimensional area–in full gear.  While running to catch a flight may be a regular occurrence here, chasing down a lob or between gates certainly isn’t.

For those on their way in or out of Düsseldorf, be prepared for a new kind of airport experience.  Enjoy the Games and meet sports idols on the way to your destination!  Swimming champion Christian Keller, table tennis star Timo Boll, and former Brazilian soccer player Ailton will all be in attendance.

Passengers who have never seen the trendy new sport of headis shouldn’t miss the 2012 Headis Masters, one of the toughest competitions of it’s kind also making its home in the terminal.

Everything is free of charge and open to audience participation.  For a full schedule of events, click here.  Have a translation site ready, as it is only available in German.

With tactics this interesting, it will be exciting to see what companies have planned for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games!  Skiing and snowboarding in an airport may not be practical, but perhaps we will see other means of innovative marketing strategies.
