Hikers can now use their iPhones to discover new trails and find other important information before setting out into the wild with the Sierra Club Trail Explorer application.  Even city-dwellers can find hidden paths they never knew about with Trail Explorer.

For anyone who has ever returned from a hike three hours later than expected.  For anyone who was not prepared to be on all fours and scaling a rock when they entered at the trailhead.  This free app is for you.

Not only can you search for and discover new places to practice your favorite pastime, you can adjust your expectations before you go.  Powered by alltrails.com, with a library of over 40,000 trails in North America, you can see exactly what you’re getting into before you leave the house.  Each listing includes a path description, map, difficulty level, distance, photos, reviews and more.  And if you like it, you can save it and head back again and again without the frustration of trying to remember where the trailhead was.  It also offers a list of activity options, i.e. if you can bring your bike.

The application works completely offline, so connectivity will never be an issue.  If you find more places you want to see than than you possibly have time for, make a wish list!  It will be there when you’re ready.

The Trail Explorer app will work on any iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with iOS 4.0 or later.  GPS tracking requires an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4.
