The countdown to the Vimeo Awards on June 7th in New York City has begun, and the four lucky action sports finalists have been chosen.
The Action Sport category will be judged by a group of talented judges including snowboarder Travis Rice, filmmaker Stacy Peralto, and surfer Alana Blanchard. Together, they will change someone’s life. The winner of the action sports category will receive a $5,000 grant to create a new film within the year. The grand prize winner will be given $25,000 for their new work and, if this year is any example, will serve as a judge at next year’s awards.
The finalists cover a wide range of topics and styles of filmmaking, making it a tough decision for the judges when it comes time to pick a winner. Here are the videos still up for consideration:
Experience Freedom is about–well, flying. Skydiving, wingsuiting, BASE jumping. Aptly named, this video puts encapsulates freedom in a way that will leave you breathless and ready to take to the sky.
Filmmakers paired up with a National Geographic photographer in On Assignment as he sets out capture the rock climbing and slacklining lifestyle. If there were one word to describe this video, it would be daring. Climbers and artists swing side by side on vertical rock faces, one on each side of the camera to get the shots and footage that will make the cut.
Delve into the world of skateboarding in Afghanistan with Skateistan: To Live And Skate Kabul. An unusual sport for the area, kids skateboarding, especially girls, turn heads wherever they go. And it’s not always in a good way.
Dark Side of the Lens is an artistically filmed piece focused on a photographer who spends most of his time in, on, or under the water filming surfers and ocean life. It’s a beautifully shot testament to a man and his art.
Tickets to the awards show are sold out, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t fun to be had. The festival will host a variety of excellent speakers, workshops, conversations, and parties. Passes are still available and can be purchased here. It will run from June 7-9, 2012.
