With Kraft’s “Gay Oreo” controversy sweeping the nation and retired Olympic Skiing Champion Anja Paerson’s recent announcement, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender culture has made its way into the forefront of mass media. Adding to the buzz, Vermont displays its support for the LGBT culture by sponsoring upcoming LGBT events.
Vermont advocates for the LGBT community through sponsored events such as ”Provincetown for Women” on July 20th. Ski Vermont and the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing (VDTM) will co-sponsor a four festival event for women in Provincetown, Ma. Ski Vermont and VDTM will providing full staffing and distribute premium Vermont giveaways including a ski and stay prize package, and 100 VIP gift bags. The leading event “Girl Splash” will welcome over 500 guests to immerse themselves in the LGBT culture while including some of the nation’s foremost lesbian writers and influential LGBT couples in attendance. Last year, this Girl Power Productions series of events welcomed over 15,000 participants.
With the goal of elevating VT as a four-season LGBT destination. Vermont Tourism Commissioner Megan Smith states, “Ahead of the curve, our state led the nation in LGBT equality and we take pride in being an open, sage, and non-judgmental culture.”
Another VDTM sponsored event coming up is the second annual Northern Decadence Food & Travel Expo as part of the annual Vermont Pride Festival on September 22nd Burlington, VT. The event hopes steer the LGBT travel market to VT.
Vermont has a historic past with support for the LGBT community by being the first state to legally recognize gay couples by creating civil unions, and passing marriage equality through the legislature.
