The 2012 ESPY Awards – short for “Excellence In Sport Performance Yearly” – took place Wednesday evening, July 11, 2012 at the Nokia Live Theater, Los Angeles. ESPN highlighted some of the greatest moments in sports, awarding select athletes voted upon online via the American public. It is an honor just to be nominated for the prestigious award, even more exciting to win. This year, snowboarding swept the Action Sports category, with the legend himself, Shaun White, taking home Best Male Action Sport Athlete for the fifth consecutive year, and Jamie Anderson winning Best Female Action Sport Athlete.

Check out Shaun’s interview after he won his award to hear why he didn’t participate in the Summer X Games this year for skateboarding:

It was no surprise that Shaun White took home the ESPY Award considering his ridiculous perfect 100 scored at Winter X Games 2012 in the Superpipe. If you missed it, or want to see it again, check out the video and photos from his 2012 Winter X Games performance.

The two accomplished winners proved worthy of the awards in this year’s Winter X Games, erupting the crowd in Aspen with huge airs and gnarly tricks, both taking home gold medals for their excellent performance.

Jamie Anderson also took X Games gold this year with 95.33 point Slopestyle run featuring a beautiful cab 720 and switch backside 540 perfectly executed.

Here’s Jaime’s gold medal run from the 2012 Winter X Games:

We won’t mention our disappointment about the Best Female Athlete results, considering alpine skier Lindsey Vonn’s perfect season and 16 career Golden Globe titles. At least she has never punched a girl in the face during a basketball game, but who’s paying any attention… Well, hey – we are dedicated to skiers around the newsroom and will always support our athletes. We were stoked to celebrate Vonn’s nomination at an exclusive Red Bull hosted “Sweet 16″ party on Monday evening. Check out the video and the photo gallery!

We would also like to congratulate freestyle skier, Kaya Turski, for her 2012 ESPY nomination and stellar season this year.

The ESPYS gather top celebrities from sports and entertainment to commemorate the past year in sports by recognizing major sports achievements, reliving unforgettable moments and saluting the leading performers and performances. The 2012 ESPYS recognizes both sport-specific achievements, such as “Best MLB Player” and “Best WNBA Player,” and best-in-sport winners, such as “Best Team” or “Best Female Athlete” that pit nominees from different sports against each other.  The ESPYS honor ESPN’s commitment to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a partnership launched with the late Jim Valvano at the inaugural ESPYs in 1993.
